Check Photo Metadata Before Sharing a Public Copy

A photo may contain location, capture time, device details or copyright information, but not every photo contains every kind of tag. Inspect the file you intend to share, decide what to remove, and check the exported copy again. Local processing avoids an upload to a converter; it is not proof that the exported file contains no identifying information.

Decide what is sensitive and what is useful

Location coordinates can identify a home or client site. Capture dates and device details may also be inappropriate for a public copy. Copyright and credit fields can be useful to keep, while color information may affect how the image appears. Treat an archival original and a public export as different assets rather than deleting everything from your only copy.

Check more than the visible properties panel

An operating-system properties panel may display only a subset of metadata. A metadata inspection tool can show repeated tags and their groups. ExifTool documents using its -a, -G1 and -s options to inspect duplicates, locations and tag names; its FAQ also warns that GPS information may be stored outside the EXIF GPS group. Check the relevant formats rather than treating one empty field as proof of complete removal.

Understand what browser re-encoding does

Re-encoding a raster image generally produces a new pixel-based file without copying the original EXIF fields. However, output paths and formats differ. ZipMyImages SVG cleanup only removes comments and whitespace, so other metadata can remain in the markup. Do not infer that every file is stripped simply because a conversion tool runs locally.

Verify the final public copy

  • →Keep the original and create a separate export for sharing.
  • →Inspect the export with a metadata viewer that supports its actual file type.
  • →Check location, capture time, device identification and any sensitive text fields.
  • →Confirm orientation and color appearance after metadata changes.
  • →Review the visible picture for addresses, faces, screens and reflections.
  • →Share the inspected export, not the unmodified original beside it.

Metadata cleanup does not anonymize the visible contents or change information already shared elsewhere. It also does not guarantee that the hosting service will leave the file unchanged. For confidential work, follow the client sharing policy and inspect the final downloadable version when your permissions allow it.
