Photo Delivery: Separate Originals from Web Exports

Published

Keep archival originals separate from client delivery copies. A web gallery, social post and print order can require different dimensions, formats and metadata policies. Establish the intended use before compression, then export from the original rather than repeatedly shrinking a previous JPEG. A small delivery file is not a replacement for an editable master.

Confirm the delivery specification

Ask for the destination, intended display or print dimensions, accepted formats and any byte limit. For print, agree the physical output and printer requirements rather than borrowing a web preset. Retain the editing source and original capture files when those are part of your archive; a converted JPEG cannot restore discarded source data.

Create role-specific copies

Illustrative workflow: keep a master folder, a review-gallery folder and a final-delivery folder. Choose dimensions for each destination and use filenames that distinguish the versions. Export a representative set before the full collection: include skin tones, dark fabric, fine hair and a smooth gradient.

Check color and metadata intentionally

Compare exports in the receiving workflow, especially when the source uses a wide color gamut or profile-dependent appearance. Browser processing is not a substitute for a controlled print color workflow. Decide whether copyright, credit, capture dates or location should remain. Metadata removal can affect useful information as well as privacy-sensitive tags.

Review the archive you actually send

Extract the delivery ZIP and confirm the number of images, names, dimensions and formats. Check that the web folder does not accidentally contain originals or unintended private files. For online previews, test the platform output because it may recompress your upload. Save the agreed export settings with the job so a later request can be recreated from the masters rather than from an already-lossy copy.
